The archaeological soundings on the site for the future Álvaro Esquerdo college are finished

On behalf of the Servicio Municipal de Arqueología and in collaboration with the Department of Technical Services and Town Planning, the relevant archaeological soundings have been undertaken, during the last two weeks, on the land marked out for the future Álvaro Esquerdo College.

On the 7756 square metre site, using a backhoe loader machine, 10 archaeological soundings were taken totalling 263.64 metres of trenches.

The area involved is within an Area of Archaeological Vigilance because of its proximity to one of the Municipalities Roman burial grounds. In such cases the works are required under the Law of Valencian Cultural Heritage 1998 (Ley de Patrimonio Cultural Valenciano de 1998).

The results have been negative; nothing has been detected in the stratum nor were there any archaeological structures. In doing this one is performing the Memorandum of Intervention to be presented to the Council for Education, Research, Culture and Sport. This is so that, from a heritage view point, the works for the future college can be authorised.
