Oriental pieces

The decorative objects in this collection are framed within the oriental influence that occurred, especially in the second half of the 19th century. After 250 years of isolation, in the middle 19th century, Japan opened up to the West, triggering a flow of travelers to the Far East, who were amazed by the style, technique and oriental aesthetics.

Perhaps a relevant moment for the commercialization of Japanese objects was the 1862 London Exhibition, in which Sir Rutherford Alcock, the British ambassador to Japan, presented a number of objects he had acquired in the eastern country. In 1867 a sample of this type of pieces reappeared at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. Already at the beginning of the 20th century, exhibitions of Japanese art and objects inspired by its aesthetics were inaugurated everywhere, causing oriental motifs to be definitively incorporated into western decoration.

The collection of oriental pieces from Vilamuseu comes entirely from the Barbera dels Aragonés House Museum. The family was no stranger to this fashion and they acquired several objects of this style, all of them for decorative purposes. In addition, it seems that they had a great appreciation of these pieces, since they kept them even when some were deteriorated by time. For example, the small lacquered wooden boxes with compartments, made in the late 19th or early 20th centuries in Japan.
