This silk set belongs to the Barbera dels Aragonés collection. It consists of a long jacket (frock coat or jacket) with a beige silk taffeta tail with vertical stripes in purple. It was made between the years 1860 and 1870 and it is framed in the style of bustle skirt.
It is known as the first bustle when the skirt continues to have a lot of volume, as in typically romantic dresses, but that volume is displaced backwards. It is also part of the called upholstery fashion with skirts that resemble curtains and with ribbons, fringes and trimmings.
This type of ensemble used to have three pieces: two bodies, one of the day in the form of a jacket, which is the one that has been preserved; and surely he had another at night or at a party with short sleeves and cleavage. Only the upper part of the original skirt remains. As a garment, it has purple silk satin applications, fringed chevrons on the sleeves, bobbin lace trim on the cuffs and decorative buttons made of purple silk satin. The skirt has been made during the restoration process. It has been used a digital printing system that reproduces the original. A fabric band form the original skirt has been applied to this silk. Surely, it as cut to make another skirt or a girl's dress or even to upholster some piece of furniture.
This dress has a matching parasol that would be used precisely with the jacket for the day, to protect the whiteness of the lady's face from the sunlight.
