This porcelain vase with flowers is part of the Barbera dels Aragonés House Museum collection of decorative objects. It is found inside a glass urn called “fanal” with a wooden base. It is a very characteristic decorative detail in an Isabelline style salons, a fashion that prevailed in the mid-19th century. Currently it decorates the main living room of the house.
The Isabelline style became fashionable due to the great influence of the in the wealthy families, so this piece is included within the Isabelline decorative style and the salons of the upper classes. They used to be placed on chests and consoles.
These kinds of details usually used to be made up of a series of objects. In this case, the piece is made up of a small porcelain vase decorated to support the flowers. These flowers are made with brightly colored cloth and small wires to stiffen the paper. The last object is the characteristic glass lantern or dome that keeps the decoration protected on a wooden base. The inside of this base also used to be decorated with fake weeds, to simulate topsoil.
