Fishing staircase
The "Baixada de la Pesca" has the motto "Pujem pels pescadors de la Vila" (we go up for the fishermen of "la Vila"), and is dedicated to fishing, an age-old activity that is still of great economic importance in "la Vila", and related to the brand "peix fresc de la llotja de la Vila Joiosa" (fresh fish from the Villajoyosa fish market).
Fishing in Villajoyosa has developed, especially, since the 20th century,
when the commercial traffic declined.
Traditionally they used to fish in pairs of sail boats.
Many Villajoyosa boats spent months in the fishing grounds of Africa, Andalucía and the Balearics, only returning for the fiestas of Santa Marta in July.

The Villajoyosa fishing fleet is made of nearly 40 boats.
