Cinema staircase
This stairway runs alongside the old Cinema Paz. It highlight the many old cinemas in Villajoyosa and the importance of this art form in 20th and 21st century society.
The first cinema in Villajoyosa was the Teatro Circo (1880-1916)
From 1916 to 1919 it was the Salón Moderno.
And on Sundays there was the mobile cinema.
The Cine Olimpia (1919) was adapted for sound in the 1930s.
At the time of its disappearance in 2005 it was the oldest in the province.
The Cine Jonia (1947) provided cultural conversations in the 1950s.
The Mediterráneo (1956) had two theatres with big screens.
In the 1930s, the first summer cinema, the Cine de Verano, was set up next to the Market.
In the 1940s the Cine Azul, Cine Jonia and Cine Gloria, and in the 1950s to 1970s the summer cinemas: Palasiet, Mediterráneo Aitana, Colón and San Antonio.
The Cine Paz (1964-2001) was right next to the stairs.
It had a capacity for 1400 people, toilets, canteen
and a concave screen for films in cinemascope
(a filming system that achieved very wide projections).
