This route explores the most mountainous part of Vila Joiosa, where you can enjoy walking through one of the few pine forests near to the coast. It goes to past the distinctive El Cantal peak and along the ancient border between the kingdoms of Aragon and Castile. It is a long but easy walk, which mainly follows forest tracks. You can take different excursions along it to suit your liking. From the southernmost part of the route, along the path through the Aigüeta gully (not signposted), you can walk down to the Xarco beach in about 45 minutes. To the North a variation of the main route follows a path along the crest of the Sierra de la Mola with stunning views of the sea and the inland mountain ranges. When you get to the end of the path, you can walk down to the Reservoir (this stretch is not signposted).
This route is highly recommended for the autumn and winter months, when it is cold and rainy in the mountains further inland.
It is recommendable to wear appropriate footwear, sufficient and suitable clothing, plenty of water and sun protection. Don’t leave the path and keep your impact on the countryside to a minimum.
