Saint Anthony’s Chapel (panel 25)
This hermitage was already in existence at the beginning of the 16th century. Here people venerate the holy protectors of the fields: Abdon and Senen, the saints of the hailstones; Saint Anthony Abbot, known as Anthony the Great, patron saint of animals, which are brought here to be blessed on 17th January; and Saint Michael the Archangel, on whose feast day a fair, granted by Charles I in 1533, is celebrated. The Hermitage school (panel 26)
It was built in 1908. It was the first public school built in Villajoyosa. In this panel you have a tactile image of the facade. Juan Samper gifted the land and Dr. Álvaro Esquerdo, born in this neighbourhood, paid for the work. The school had rooms for teachers and for the vicar of the Hermitage. The council restored the building in 2009 for various uses. Esquerdo also built the school in the Calle de Colón, now Vilamuseu, the museum of the city of Villajoyosa. The Stone Cross (panel 27)
The junctions of Roman roads were considered sacred and magical places. Later they were Christianised with stone crosses called "cruceros". This one already existed in 16th century. They were meeting points for workers or lovers. On Palm Sunday a procession comes here to bless the palms. The current cross was erected in 1939, because the previous one had been destroyed. The Enchanted Rock (panel 28)
This unusual rock beside the ancient path has given rise to various legends. The best known of these tells that on Saint John’s Eve the rock opens and a little old lady walks out. She is dressed in white and wearing a pamela hat —that is a broadbrimmed hat— adorned with coloured ribbons. Young people should take one before the lady returns to the rock. If they succeed they will find true love. But woe betide you if you choose the black ribbon for soon you will be dead! Multimedia guide
Torre Dalt
Its name means ‘upper tower’. In Villajoyosa there are seven known torres de huerta, or inland watchtowers, in big old houses. They served to keep watch over the land and completed the pirate alarm system. Danger signals from the watchtowers on the coast could be seen from them. This tower is to be found adjacent to the old Camí del Peix –or Fish Way –on the road to Alcoy. It has a winepress to press grapes and a riurau – or colonnade – for drying raisins. The "Olivera Grossa" (the Great Olive Tree)
Among oldest trees in Spain, the Olivera Grossa (the Great Olive Tree), It already gave its olives to the owners of the luxury Roman villa of Xauxelles. It's a 1,400 year old olive tree. This tree has a trunk of 8.9 meters, a crown of 11.5 meters and a height of 7 and a half meters.
